HIGH VIBE COMMUNICATORS
WHY YOUR ENERGY IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS AND HOW TO RAISE IT COME SHOWTIME
The Business of Interpersonal Communication
The truth is everybody communicates for a living. Because no matter what business you’re in, you’re in the people business. The role of a good presenter and communicator is to hold space for everyone in the room and take them on a journey that ultimately ends with being able to project a positive future that they can get behind. The room might consist of a few dozen or a few thousand. And in every scenario, you are the ring master taking each person on that curated adventure! You are in charge of lifting the mood, changing gears in an instant and most importantly, reading the room so you know how far you have to dig and what tools you need to use to bring everyone to the “sweet spot.”
No matter how many people are in the audience, the onus is on you because the energy of an event is what drives everything: good connection, good vibes, good synergy etc. These events are where relationships are formed and deals are made. That’s a tall order and one that I take seriously!
Energy as a Communication Skill of a Strong Presenter
A strong presenter works with energy; your own and that of others. You’re holding space for a group of people, some of whom are having a good day or a difficult day. You may be inspiring them to take collective action, come on board a new project or maybe even do something that’s uncomfortable. And we all know that change is hard. This becomes particularly difficult for you to do if you, as the presenter, haven’t got much fuel in the tank. You’re human, after all, and have much happening in your personal and professional life all at once. So recharging your batteries is essential before a presentation or pitch!
Imagine a room of hundreds. Some are stressed about work, others are worried about a family emergency, someone might be struggling in their marriage, a colleague might be celebrating a promotion or just checked out because they’re due to leave the company any day now. That’s a lot of different energy levels in one space. And there you are, tasked with bringing the overall vibrational levels to a maximum.
There are days when I’m not at my best; either not feeling well or am mentally depleted and irritated. Sound familiar? I have to make sure I don’t let what’s going on in my personal life affect the energy I’ll be projecting come show time! Easier said than done. But you knew that already!
As a communicator you have to get really good at recognizing your boundaries.
Because you have the power to influence mood, micro-moments, feelings and decision making. And energy is influential!
How to Refuel for Showtime
How I prepare on days I’m not feeling “in the mood” to deliver what’s required:
- Self-reiki (a Japanese energy balancing technique). An hour of reiki is
equivalent to 3 hours of sleep! - Listen to calming music (my ‘calm app’ is everything!) without lyrics to distract me. The last thing I need are more thoughts and more chatter!
- Take a nap or at least close my eyes in the middle of the day if I’m presenting
at night. - Box breathing if I’m feeling anxious (4 breaths in, 4 breaths hold, 4 breaths
out and repeat for about 1 minute). - Prepare for the event early in the day so I have at least 1 hour for myself
where I’m not thinking about what I have to do later. I wake up extra early for morning presentations so I have an hour of alone time to ground myself and
focus. - Do something that makes me happy so I don’t feel I’ve had to give up
anything to be able to deliver on the job. - Light a nice scented candle or burn some incense (whatever gives you the
warm and fuzzies). - Prioritise what I respond to on text and email. If it’s not fatal, I leave it alone
until after my event. - I love crystals so I always pick one to bring to the event with me; either to
have around or sometimes to hold in one hand when I’m hosting so I know I
have a supportive anchor! (Come to think of it, I used to have a blankie as a
kid. Did you? Same thing, right?) It’s about what gives you comfort. - Go for a walk, light exercise or a few moments in nature on my own because
I’ll be surrounded by many people’s energies later on and I need to replenish
for that so that I’m of value and impact on the job. - If I need a boost and am feeling lethargic, I do love group training like spin
class or a HIIT as close to showtime as possible! It releases endorphins,
dopamine and serotonin which puts me in a good mood and provides great
natural energy that can be sustained for 3-4 hours.
Final Thoughts
Everybody’s ritual of self-care and preparation varies. Find what works for you. Experiment and change it up and listen to your body on the day. Maybe you do a little more or less of something. Either way, follow the good. The more aware you are of what helps you to vibrate higher and feel supported, the more of service you’ll be to others. And that’s what matters at the end of the day. Here’s to vibing high! You got this.
